Emergency Food Access

***Local food pantries and school districts are providing emergency food access in our community. If you are in need of food assistance, please call 211.***

The 211 number is the place to send people to start if they are in need for food assistance. This number has information about other essential community services as well (rent, unemployment, etc.)

Central Texas Food Bank

    The Central Texas Food Bank is exempt from Austin’s ‘Shelter in Place’ order, issued Tuesday, March 24, 2020. As an essential business providing food to nearly 46,000 people each week, we will remain open and accepting volunteers, in accordance with Order issued by the City of Austin. 
    They’ve adjusted their volunteer shifts to maximize social distancing and are taking even more sanitary precautions than usual to minimize risks. If you’re healthy and not in a high-risk group, please consider helping out. Volunteers must sign up online prior to showing up to help out. Click here to volunteer.

Farmer’s Markets

City of Austin and Travis County have officially mandated that Farmers’ Markets are an ‘essential service’ and can remain open to the public. They are all operating with new safety precautions for both sellers and shoppers.

As it currently stands, Texas Farmers’ Market at Lakeline on Saturdays 9am-1pm and Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller on Sundays 10am-2pm will continue to be open, with major adjustments to our operations in our efforts to keep our food safe and available to the communities we serve.

  • AISD Meals During Closure Local school districts are providing meals for their students. All others should call 211 for information on where to access emergency food resources. This information has been added to the City of Austin COVID-19 website. Families can now see the location of the bus via the WheresTheBus link here. Simply click the link for your corresponding stop. There is no need to download or sign up for the app.

  • WIC
    • Continuing to serve clients over the phone, sending cards via mail
    • Limited drive-by services to provide infant formula, etc – by appointment only
    • Gaps/needs – staff stretched thin to answer phones, scheduling center at max capacity (phone, email, comments on FB); Community members who reach out will experience a delay in response.
  • Homeless
    • austintexas.gov/homelessness has a page on accessing services
    • Caritas kitchen is closed, meals can be picked up at the door and food pantries are open at both locations for existing clients only
    • Mobile Loaves and Fishes – distributing in Montopolis, MREs and other occasional deliveries
